Great Book > ORDER HERE -- > http://images.rods.com/RS/SR/Product/58_L.jpg
A lack of repetitive weekly routine sums it up for every developed problem. Dedication and discipline are a must to be competitive. Skipping slow relaxed work and going straight to competition is a guarantee for failure. Keep him broke - light and listening.
Retraining a soured/spoiled/confused horse is not always 100% successful and that is why WE PUSH PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ! A great horse is not born he is trained and not overnight. It takes years of repetitive slow work to make a champion and it brings me to tears to see a good horse ruined by no SLOW HOMEWORK. Creating bad habits that sometimes cannot ever be corrected..
CITY SLICKERS
The movie was so cute and the city slickers wanted to show up and be immediate cowboys. Unfortunately there are no superman suits to slip into and it takes years to be a great horseman. Please continue Horsemanship lessons and don't give up... Novice riders need experienced well trained horses and cost more, but will save your bottom as they are safer, more patient and can show you the ropes... A cheaper untrained inexperienced horse can hurt a novice rider. A novice rider will confuse the untrained horse and usually develop many issues. Cowboy's are not born ....They are TAUGHT : )
Molly Powells Rate N Turn is a great bit for the little riders or if you have a hard running Barrel or Rope horse adjust the curb tighter for more whoa http://www.thetackstop.com/bitr310.ht Lynn McKenzie is awesome and have been to many of her Barrel Racing clinics in my younger years... Biggest Novice Mistakes How fast can you make your Barrel - Rope or Trail Horse Sour N Ruin him ? P.....D......Q..... Horses know the difference between the Beginner and the Trainer. They can buck, rear, refuse to move = sull up. There is a lot of psychology in owning and continuing training on a performance horse. Some horse have a low tolerance for a foolish rider playing on their back and will find the eject button to stop the continued harassment. Horses need to respect their Riders. Trust you to give over control. This has to be earned. The new owner needs to follow the same routine of repetition the Trainer was using when the horse was progressing. * Not exercising your horse into a sweatin the round pen for 20 minutes before riding. * Feeding them high protein feeds and supplements. ( getting them race horse high ) CLICK LINK ==== > FEED TOTAL EQUINE
* Keeping them couped up in a stall to ball up all their energy is just waiting for a catastrophe. * Not learning to walk, trot and lope perfect circles ! Please do not just ride your horse around aimlessly with no goal or purpose... am i a perfectionist. Yes * Not learning to flex their nose to the inside of the circle ! * How to make an alley sour horse ? Not walking and stopping at the barrels, Never sitting in the alleyway. Running running running... no slow work. * How to make one run up the fence? Pumping ...and same as above no slow work. * Use wisdom keep him happy and calm relaxed... Even if you have to get there early before the shows start to walk him back and forth from the first barrel to the alleyway.. Whats it worth to you to keep him from blowing up mentally / * Save your dead run for competition not practice ... * The worst thing you can do is...is jump on your horse and RUN-RUN-RUN ... * Goofing off/ Racing/ sprinting them and then wanting them to walk calmly ( Hello) what planet are you on ? You cannot do that. When you first get on you walk a 20 -25 foot circle then trot a 20-25 foot circle then SLOW ROCKING CHAIR LOPE a 20 -25 foot circle focusing on breaking at the poll. * If you cannot walk trot and lope perfect circles you have NO BUSINESS trying to compete.. ( It's not fair to the horse) First things first... * Parents need to supervise their children if they don't want the horses ruined and will have to be retrained. * What ever you teach them when you take them home is what they will do from now on ... * Not treating them like a 1000 lb horse but a play toy. * Speed kills - ruins the horses handle - keep them collected - not wound up. * Not working on their handle daily - they will loose their handle day by day. * Not realising a horse needs training daily and can be ruined. * Not practicing turning, stopping, backing in the round pen before you go out into the open. If you have no control in the round pen where it is safe, do not go into the open envirnment. Magic Seat Johnny Spur and i both use these on our hard turning barrel horses. It will also help a child or novice stay in the seat. http://www.thetackstop.com/magicseat.htm
(1.) TO STALL OR NOT TO STALL Stalling a horse is mentally depressing, can cause, cribbing, stall walking, weaving and even colic. It is not natural. Horses prefer to graze ALL DAY. *** We prefer 100 x 300 runs that they can run and play and be a horse. This is good mentally keeps them happy and physically they have good circulation and are not stocked up from being couped up in a 12 x 12 stall with nothing to do it's like a jail cell to them. A horse that is kept in a stall will be HIGH ENERGY when he is saddled and will require 20 minutes of running in the round pen prior to saddling to assure safety for a novice rider - even the most broke horses require daily exercise. Make sure they have a good sweat ! They will feel very energetic and excited to be out and will need to stretch out play - jump - turn fast = normal things they would do if they had the opportunity to do if they were outside all the time.
(2.) High protein feed and supplements Fat & Sassy ???? --- > Do not pump your horse up = get him HIGH on vitamins and supplements and low exercise routine and expect him to be calm and relaxed. 9% grain is the lowest protein - 14-16% grain is for RACE HORSES... If you are only trail riding feed 2 scoops of oats only once a day or 2 scoops of sweet feed 9-12% only once a day. They can have all the fertilized coastal hay they can eat.
(3.) Worm your horse Ivermectin every 3 months Strongid C 5 gallon bucket feed thru 1 scoop a day. Tube worm by the VET for serious conditions If he is wormy he will not maintain weight... They eat off the ground and pick up worms and eggs.
(4.) DENTIST Have their teeth floated by an equine dentist every 6 months to file the razor sharp tall points that cut the inside of their mouth. They are in pain to chew and the bit will cause pain. Their teeth look like a dogs teeth in the back of their mouth and go all the way back behind the eye.
(5.) WATERPROOF TURN OUT SHEET HORSES PREFER OUTSIDE PASTURES WHERE THEY CAN MOVE FREELY. Use a water proof turnout sheet.
(6.) Be a Cowboy No problem horses just Problem Riders Care about your horse. Don't ride him like you are at a CIRCUS FREE FOR ALL = SIX FLAGS ride - YOU just created a MONSTOR ! and now blaming the horse for his actions that you just taught him. A Cowboy builds a bond of trust with his horse. A horse has to trust the Cowboy or he will resist and rebell. Unfortanatly horses know the difference in a novice and go into flight mode because the novice did not do his homework like the Cowboy did and the relationship becomes that of an army without a Captain. Horses need daily tune up reminders of how to stay soft and supple in the bridle. A professional Cowboy can achieve this through his many years of learning through mistakes trials and errors and knows what to do. Trusting bond between animal and man is built through repetition training routines that keep the horse listening to the same unconfusing cues. The Cowboy will not speed up a routine but slow it down to teach the horse what he wants.
*** Use wisdom and ask God to help you with your horse and your relationship with him. Listen for HIS soft spoken answer to guide you
