CC_2ND_B_cropTRAINING TIPS -PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
HOW TO RUIN A BARREL HORSE? NO SLOW WORK...
1. No slow work out of the alleyway
2. Pull
him up out of the pasture and go.
3. Not keeping him in shape can cripple them.
4. Running with no scoring in the alleyway or circling
barrels at a walk.
5. Not keeping them tuned up br
oke in the face - light and responsive.
6. No whoa 7. No flex 8. No bend.

(TRAINING BIT & COMPETITION BITS)
Use a draw bit wWDD_backing2ith no curb and no
tie down during the week to teach him to flex to your knee and to tuck his nose into his chest. Use both hands keep your hands low on his shoulders. When you stop your horse keep your shoulders back. Lean forward to move forward.
Don't jerk him - apply even firm pressure and bump with both spurs lightly slowly - not getting him upset. If they don't know what you are asking they will be fearful. Use another bit for competition and more control if needed. We like www.shallowcreekbits.com
(FLEX & BENDING) We use barrels to circle repeatedly to keep their nose on the rim and push their rib out. Circle at a walk until they relax bend and put their head down. (ALLEYWAY WORK - RESET) We use the ALLEYWAY to slow everything down and get rate, flex and headset. Every time you compete on your horse you take out all the handle and add charge. Go back to the practice pen and reincorporate his handle, position, rate etc. He cannot do his best and will
get nervous in the ALLEYWAY without slow work. Lope out to the 1st barrel - stop spin AWAY FROM THE BARREL and return. Do this several times a week to keep the edge off. This will help him leave flat - stop flat and give him confidence to relax. REWARDING HIM BY WALKING WHEN YOU GET TO THE BARREL. Circle the barrels at a walk many times until they are tipping their nose in automatically.
